-Shipping Lane Operations
Shipping
Lane operations by helicopters
Koggala is ideally
located to support the shipping lane operations with Katukurunda and
Weerawila ideally located to enhance launch and recovery of helicopters
as well as relocating operations during change of monsoons and above
all the Hambantota disused airstrip is strategically located to support
this operation.
South Africa has
made the shipping lane South of Cape of Good Hope a major contributor
to its National Economy whilst many other States provide an array of
services to the ships by helicopters where shipping lanes lie in close
proximity to its territory.
250
to 325 ships ply between 5 to 15 nautical miles South of Sri Lanka daily,
yet untapped for the growth of the National Economy, as well as for
the regional economic well being. The traffic flow is only second to
Cape of Good Hope.
|
-
250
to 325 vessels per day pass South of Sri Lanka
-
Average of 8550 vessels per month pass South of Sri Lanka
-
Only about 350 vessels call in to the port of Colombo per
month
-
Less than 7 vessels call in to the port of Galle per month
Who USES THE SHIPPING LANE? HOW Important
IS IT?
-
Almost
all of China and Japanese exports are transported to Europe and
the Middle East via this shipping lane
-
Almost
all of Europe's exports to the far east utilize this shipping
lane
-
Virtually
all of middle eastern oil exports destined for the energy hungry
markets of Japan & China are carried via the same passage
This ocean super
shipping way had been an important component of global trade ever
since the man learnt to sail, and since the industrial, technological
and commercial revolutions of the modern world, it has become a
life line of today's globalized economy
CAN
SRI LANKA BENEFIT AS A COUNTRY?
The southern province of Sri Lanka, is located a mere FIVE NAUTICAL
MILES from some of the rich worlds most critical economic activities,
which is – THE MOVEMENT OF TRADE & ENERGY GOODS between
different parts of the world
Yet, the southern province
remains one of the poorest parts of the country, despite its proximity
to the pipeline that supports global trade of the rich world.
Sri Lanka has a unique
opportunity to capitalize on its proximity to this super shipping
way by providing support services to the vast shipping infrastructure
that utilizes this shipping lane.
Presently only about 35
to 50 ships out of the MINIMUM OF 8550 vessels that traverse through
this busy shipping lane during a month are rendezvoused and serviced
by utilizing 4 boats operated by private ship servicing companies
which accounts for a paltry figure of less than 0.5 percent.
A major lost opportunity
exist to capture some of the value arising from this vast economic
activity.
Innovative services will
distinguish Sri Lanka port services infrastructure from services
provided by ports of other competing States.
SRI LANKA’S ADVANTAGES
Proximity to the shipping
lane
Well
established marine engineering sector & expertise
skilled,
trainable labour pool
-
Competitive
pricing due to more efficient labour costs
ADVANTAGES
TO SRI LANKA – FOREIGN EXCHANGE
Assume we service
just 100 of the vessels that use the shipping lane for a month –
ie; 1.17% of the total flow
Average contract using industry figures utilizing four boats at
the rate of $2000 per vessel ( note – the rates will be higher
with helicopters due to its efficiency, mobility, reliability and
safety). The present boat operation consumes 48 hours whilst a helicopter
operation to meet similar task would be accomplished in two hours
at a maximum ie. a single helicopter can operate ten times more
at a minimum, well within crew rest limitations and flight time
limitations during the same period of time that a single boat operates.
$2000 x 100 = $200,000 or SLR. 20,000,000 per month (Note- This
is just 1.17% of the total volume)
The above excludes any emergency services and unscheduled maintenance
which will be a regular occurrence that can yield far more than
the above at the said percentage.
A Pace Setter for off-shore
oil Exploration
Experience in
day and night maritime operations will lead the way for off- shore
oil rig operations for Sri Lanka’s helicopter aircrews.
Helicopter
- an essential Dimension in oil ExplorationLets use Sri Lankan
Skills
-
Helicopters are an absolute necessity for oil-rig platform support
-
Platforms
require DAILY 24 hour support for crew rotations, food delivery,
engineering maintenance support, casualty evacuation etc.
Skills
Generated by War for National Prosperity
-
Every intelligent Nation who underwent similar experiences have
transformed such National traumas to a National rejuvenation.
-
The war however evil it may have been, has given Mother Lanka trained,
disciplined, skilled men & women and advanced technologies which
she would not have acquired during peace time.
-
Today we posses highly skilled experienced air crew and support
staff.
Global & Regional Growth in Aviation
-
Unprecedented global growth
in aviation had been experienced over the past few years even since
‘9/11’ providing employment to thousands of people
-
The
regional aviation industry is booming
-
Presently
there are 4 companies engaged in the oil & gas industry in India
(over 30 helicopters)
