Float Plane Operations – Small and Medium Commercial

Southern Region accounts for a considerably high amount of water sources within a limited land area. Chandrika Wewa, Uda walawe reservoir, Ridiyagama tank, Lunugamwehera reservoir, Tissa wewa, Dembara Wewa, Arugam bay, Weligama Bay could be prepared for float plane landings after surveys including many estuaries.
Further the coast line from Kalutara to Arugam Bay provides many excellent water aerodromes.

Misconceptions on float planes
  • Pollution from oil and fuel
  • Noise
  • Damage to Fishing Nets

No Pilot will fly if an aircraft drips a single drop of fuel or oil, it’s a nightmare as far as a pilot is concerned.

Motor boats and even domestic generators make a bigger noise than a float plane engine

Lanes can be demarcated to address the concern of damage to fishing nets, such lanes can be used for netting when ever not in use for aviation purposes.

Air Travel utilizing Southern Region Water Sources
The network of water sources available in the Southern Region is a unique feature, includes the rivers and the estuaries, where the water flow speed is considerably reduced and most parts of the coastal oceanic sources could be used as water aerodromes. It provides excellent float plane air travel capability within the area and it may not be limited to tourist but also locals visiting the area for business and leisure as well as travel within the Region.
